Zhejiang, meaning “meandering river” in English, is a province in eastern China whose picturesque landscape harbours thousands of years of tradition. With a population of eight million, its capital Hangzhou hosts an orchestra of rare prestige even within China, melding the traditional folk music of the Shanghai region with the sounds of the present. Here in Europe, this unique approach is perhaps even more exciting in that the violins are replaced by the sing-song sound of the erhu, the cellos a...re joined by the plucked liuqin and ruan, and the woodwinds represented by the dizi, a bamboo flute. Various plucked and cimbalom-like instruments, mouth organs and an extensive percussion section also combine to surprise the European ear. However, this is not the only reason for the orchestra’s success in selling out concert halls from the Berliner Philharmonie to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and from the Musikverein in Vienna to Beijing – the ensemble’s performances are characterised by a supreme precision, natural musicality and mesmerising diversity typical of the world’s leading symphony orchestras. This Budapest concert features seven exciting pieces relating in diverse ways to Chinese tradition, the first being the Spring Festival Overture inspired by folk customs welcoming in the Chinese New Year. The solo part in a concerto written for the guzheng, a silk-stringed Chinese zither, will be played by Su Chang, one of the world’s foremost exponents of the instrument, and someone who has performed with the New York Philharmonic and was personally invited by Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun to première a new work in Zurich in 2012. Directing the orchestra from the podium is Zhang Guoyong, who studied in Moscow under the legendary Gennady Rozhdestvensky and is one of the most distinguished conductors in China as professor and dean of conducting at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and artistic director of the Shanghai Opera House.
