Budapest Wagner Days 2026

Budapest Wagner Days

5-30 June 2026

A double helping of the Ring to mark a double anniversary: we are celebrating two significant Wagnerian milestones at the Budapest Wagner Festival in 2026. It has been 150 years since the entire Ring tetralogy was first heard at the Bayreuth Festival – and with a Hungarian, János Richter, conducting – and visitors to the festival at Müpa Budapest have been enjoying the incomparable atmosphere of Hungary’s Wagner fiesta for 20 years.

The Budapest Wagner Days launched in 2006 with a performance of Parsifal, so it is no coincidence that the work will open the anniversary event two decades later – and with an all-star cast to boot. For the monumental undertaking of The Ring of the Nibelung – once again performed according to Hartmut Schörghofer’s excellent direction – an era also comes to an end, as this will be the last time Ádám Fischer conducts the Ring cycle at Müpa. As usual, the most celebrated opera stars, from Tomasz Konieczny to Magdalena Anna Hofmann and Jürgen Sacher, will take their turns on the stage. Last but not least, the enchanting Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund will select from tunes by Wagner, Richard Strauss, Berg, Dvořák and Jean Sibelius alongside one of the world’s most outstanding piano accompanists, Helmut Deutsch.

With the monumental undertaking of The Ring of the Nibelung—which audiences can once again enjoy in the outstanding staging of Hartmut Schörghofer—an era also comes to a close: Ádám Fischer will be conducting the Müpa Ring cycle here for the last time. As audiences have come to expect, the productions feature a rotating cast of the most celebrated opera stars, from Tomasz Konieczny and Magdalena Anna Hofmann to Jürgen Sacher.

A sip of Wagner

Sip on some Wagner! Throughout the entire Budapest Wagner Days festivals, we attempt to appeal to all of the senses, and this year you can’t miss our line of craft beers whose unique flavours are inspired by characters from the Ring. The Szent András Brewery’s craft beers can be tasted in four flavours, in bottled and draft versions. These beverages bearing the Budapest Wagner Days label can be purchased at Müpa Budapest’s snack bars, and you can even take all characters home in a gift box.

  • Brünnhilde: a decidedly hoppy and pleasantly spicy New England IPA flavoured with apricots and basil (5.6%)

  • Hagen: a high extract content imperial pilsner with a strong hoppy flavour (7%)

  • Siegmund: an unfiltered Belgian wheat beer with Seville orange peel and refrshing coriander (6s%)

  • Freia: pastry ale with apple, ground Ugandan vanilla and cinnamon (4,2%)

Wagner Installation

The well-known, iconic installation of Budapest Wagner Days is returning to Müpa, and this time, in honour of the anniversary, it will be completed with a small, unexpected twist designed by Antal Bodóczky. The original visual element, created as part of the strategic partnership between Müpa and MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) was based on the concept of graphic design student Dániel Dublecz. The ropes connecting the two-meter-high metal letters reflect the colors and forms of the event series’ award-winning visual identity, which was developed using sound-analysis software.

Through the partnership between Müpa Budapest and the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, which provides an exceptional environment and the required technology for education and research in the applied arts, young designers have gained an opportunity to demonstrate their talent. In the spring of 2019, the university offered its graphic design students a course aimed at creating concepts linked to Müpa Budapest's communications and artistic positioning that would inspire visitors to return.

Feel free to take photos and video of the installation, and use the #BudapestiWagnerNapok hashtag to be featured on Müpa Budapest's online social media platforms!
