While Friday is a celebration of Turkish jazz, Sunday at the Jazz Showcase throws the spotlight on Germany. More than that, the three-day event closes at this concert with a sensational meeting of both nations and generations. American alto saxophone legend and master of cool jazz Lee Konitz has played with almost everyone worth mentioning over his long career – from Dave Brubeck to Ornette Coleman, and from Charles Mingus to Gerry Mulligan and Elvin Jones – as well as participating in the recor...ding of Miles Davis’s epoch-making album Birth of the Cool. In 2006, he began working with German pianist Florian Weber. Weber’s trio, with a regular rhythm section comprising Jeff Denson and Ziv Ravitz, initially went under the name of Minsarah, gaining fame in no small part because Konitz became more than a guest, but a regular collaborator with the up-and-coming trio. Their partnership was consolidated three years later with an album, while they continued to play together on joint concert tours. The two stars of the show bring a new twist to this production at the Palace of Arts, on this occasion welcoming a rhythm section of bassist Robert Landfermann and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel, permanent members of the trio of Pablo Held, one of the most exciting German pianists on the scene today. Foregoing any attempt at stylistic categorisation, and forgetting the creative labels of cool, avant-garde, post-bop or modern, what we can look forward to on stage this evening is simply one thing: magic.
