Nils Wogram Nostalgia Trio

6 pm

Das Kapital

Pioneering nostalgia! The two young German trios performing this afternoon look to the past while exploring the most modern musical paths. The trio of trombonist Nils Wogram - featuring drums and Hammond organ, an instrument enjoying a renaissance of late - has already spent a decade breathing new life into the spiciest traditions of jazz-funk and soul jazz. All three members of the trio rank among the most remarkable musicians in their homeland, Wogram himself is recognised as a unique talent as both bandleader and composer.
One of the most original groups on the European jazz scene, Das Kapital entertains not with quotes from the famous work of Karl Marx, but with pieces by Hanns Eisler - composer of the anthem of the one-time German Democratic Republic - replete with humour and improvisation. While relying strongly on the possibilities afforded by electronics, this troika is also capable of some astonishing instrumental solos. In the hands of the trio led by Daniel Erdmann, melodies which recall communist times are transformed into jazz standards, boldly broken down into their constituent parts before being melded back together into a cohesive whole.
