Mozart expedition – Enchanted by The Magic Flute

9-15 September 2026

Following on from last year’s huge success, the Mozart Expedition, our mini-festival with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, continues this September with a whole host of exciting programmes. This time, we will explore Mozart’s final stage work, the eternally relevant The Magic Flute, from new and unconventional angles – the opera can be appreciated both as a rite of passage and a profound fable of coming of age.

Iván Fischer is staging the opera for the first time since 2015, and audiences will have the chance to see it three times. In addition, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre’s production and an interactive musical conversation dissecting the story promise plenty to get excited about. What is more, we will also examine how light defeats darkness under the guidance of Gergely Horváth, and the audience will be able to enjoy a screening of Ingmar Bergman’s iconic film.
