Das Lied von der Erde

Opening this concert will be the Hungarian premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Photoptosis, a harsh, perhaps even raw, 1968 composition that occupies a central place in the composer’s oeuvre. The title – a Greek word referring to the incidence of light and the changes of colour that result – naturally gains meaning through the notes and tones of the German composer’s work. Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, his ‘concert symphonique’, with Dénes Várjon as the soloist, has quite a different sound and feel. Das Lied von der Erde, Mahler’s visionary panorama of human existence, miraculous even in its frailty, will comprise the second half of the concert.
