Formed in 2008, Tárkány Művek have created their own separate and immensely seductive musical world from a blend of folk, jazz, pop and chansons from the interwar period. They draw their musical themes largely from traditional songs, only to conjure something entirely new through unfamiliar instrumentation and the beautiful voice of Julianna Paár. Their debut album was released in 2010 under the title Arcomba az arcod vésted (You Etched Your Face in Mine), and became an instant cult classic among fans of “urban folk”. It earned a similarly favourable reception in the international press after distribution via the prestigious World Music Network label.
The band led by cimbalom player Bálint Tárkány-Kovács was thus a worthy recipients of the Junior Prima Prize in 2012. In 2013, their new album Címesincs (No Title) included, alongside their own compositions, a Gershwin arrangement, a John Coltrane ballad and a folk song from Szék. All of this proves that Tárkány Művek are steering a steady course, making further significant steps to build bridges between geographical regions, musical genres and periods in cultural history, and between tradition and modernity – in an entertaining, smart and profoundly individual way.
