The Sámuel Baló Trio formed in the spring of 2020. Although all three members attended the Etűd Music School, it was not there that their relationship fully developed, but rather through their association with the group Ég alatti 5, who also once played at Jazz Showcase. It was in this band that pianist Sámuel Baló later played for the first time alongside Ambrus Richter and felt a common spark. Richter suggested the addition of Márk Miskolczi, and together the three prepared for Baló's thesis concert.
Although Baló completed his jazz piano studies at Austria's Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz, an institution best known for teaching mainstream jazz at a very high level, his teacher, Olaf Polziehn, placed at least as much emphasis on projecting an outlook that encouraged openness and vanquishing prejudices against any genre. Baló synthesises the experiences he has acquired here into compositions that forge elements of hardbop and modal jazz and Hungarian folk music motifs into an integrated whole.
