Jazz talent exchange - Trio Johnology
27 January 2023, Friday
5 pm - 6:15 pm
Festival Theatre
Produced by Müpa Budapest

In 2014, the Junior Prima Award-winning band leader János Egri Jr performed at the Jazz Showcase (at 17 years of age, no less) alongside Krisztián Oláh, Krisztián Lakatos Pecek and Simon Máté. In 2022, he accompanied Diána Danyi as a pianist, while this year he will perform with his own group. Though the trio's style is centred around traditional mainstream jazz, it also utilises numerous individual stylistic elements borrowed from classical music and more sophisticated pop.

János Egri Jr has been working on his own music and instrumentation for several years. He initially recorded his first composition, God Shows The Way, alongside Panna Pálmai, János Egri (his father, the acclaimed jazz bassist) and Dániel Serei. In 2020, he wrote string quartet instrumentation for the composition I Dream In The Past from the guitarist Balázs Varga (who is also appearing at the Jazz Showcase this year). The piece won the Müpa Budapest Music Competiton in the Works For Large Jazz Ensembles category. In 2021, János won the professional award and the overall prize in the Hungarian Jazz Federation's Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition. Géza Jónás comes from a musical family. He is a much sought-after double bassist, and has performed in several other groups at the Jazz Showcase - this year, he is also part of the Noémi Nagy Quartet. He has won multiple awards. In his most memorable concert so far, he performed alongside Béla Szakcsi Lakatos and Imre Kőszegi. Tamás Fazekas is a second-year student at the Liszt Academy, and also studies at the Snétberger Music Talent Centre. He is actively involved in several bands and numerous session productions. The trio's repertoire consists of covers of jazz standards, classic works, well-known film theme tunes, global hits and Egri Jr's own compositions.
