This year, following the established tradition of the last two years, the Palace of Arts again celebrates the Hungarian national holiday with a free programme and quality jazz music. At various points in the foyer, on the small stage placed by the Ludwig Múzeum side and on the grand stage in front of the Palace, all generations of Hungarian jazz will be represented, from students of the Academy of Music jazz faculty to the “golden oldies” of Hungarian jazz. The programme promises great diversity... in style and genre: everything from evergreen classic swing via cool jazz and bepop to modern mainstream. Formations include traditional jazz trios (piano, double bass, drums), joined by singers, guitarists, wind and percussion players. They will “circulate” through the venue, appearing on several different stages and various bands. The artistic director of the programme is trombonist and composer Béla Szalóky who again is encouraging brave and enterprising amateurs to bring along their own instruments and join in the music making. From eight o’clock, the evening will be rounded off with a fifty five minute big band concert from the Hungarian Customs Guard Orchestra. This will feature classic compositions by Duke Ellington, Sammy Nestico and others, as well as compositions by members of the orchestra.
