János Gonda: Choices and Impulses
16 January 2011 Sunday
7 pm - 9 pm
Festival Theatre

János Gonda is one of the founding fathers of post-war Hungarian jazz whose achievements embrace not only a lifetime of performance and composition, but also pioneering pedagogical work. In 1965 he founded the Jazz Department of the Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music, which became a department of the Budapest Teacher Training Institute of the Franz Liszt Secondary School of Music, and later a faculty of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. In 1993 he established the International Institute of Creative Music Education in Tatabánya, which he supervises as artistic director, while regularly holding courses and lectures at universities abroad. While his compositions are primarily in the jazz genre, he has also composed a great deal of music for films and musical theatre. He regularly publishes writing and for two decades was editor of the periodical Jazz, while his books are considered essential texts in Hungarian jazz education. The first half of the concert will contain a mix of composition and improvisation that explores the border where jazz meets contemporary music, while in the second half Gonda will be joined by Balázs Berkes and Imre Kőszegi in a trio that can be regarded as one of the standard-bearers and pioneering formations in Hungarian jazz.
