Habib Koité – vocals, guitar, Boubacar Sidibe – vocals, guitar, accordion, Kélétigui Diabate – balafon, violin, Abdoul Wahab Berthe – bass guitar, kamele n’goni, vocals, Mahamadou Kone – percussion, Souleymane Ann – drum In 1998, when the album Ma Ya was released, the scarcely known Habib Koité suddenly found himself one of the world’s most in demand African musicians. This record led the world music radio play lists for three months and ranked altogether at place two that year. It is no surpri...se, because guitarist and singer Koité is able to communicate the essence of various styles of Mali music – and also the influence of western dance music – with great warmth and elegance, at the same time illuminating the path for the latest neo-traditional wave of African dance music. Koité and his band Bamada – whose members include one of Mali’s living legends, the balafon violinist Kélétigui Diabate – have visited Hungary twice before: first in 1998 at the WOMUFE (World Music Festival) and in 2001 at the Sziget Festival. They released their fourth album Afriki last year and this has been rapturously received. Koité’s deepest material was born with the growing popularity of ancient Mali instruments, the kamele n’goni, the balafon and the one string violin. In its freshness and relationship to a tradition of many centuries – it speaks an easily understood and fascinating musical language. For “beginners” and “intermediate” fans of African music, this concert is not to be missed!
