The first lady of Polish jazz - this is how Aga Zaryan became known internationally after the release of her three-time platinum debut album, Picking Up The Pieces. She has remained one of Poland's most exciting voices, capable of continual renewal. At this concert, her latest band line-up will feature two guitarists as she performs live songs from her brand new album, which was inspired by the beautiful verses of the American poet Sara Teasdale.

Aga's bandmates, David Dorůžka and Szymon Mika, can also boast a long list of achievements. Dorůžka was born in Prague, and was chosen as Talent of the Year by the Czech Jazz Federation when he was just 15 years old. He was still a teenager when he was accepted to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, before being recommended for a prestigious jazz camp by none other than Pat Metheny. Dorůžka recorded his first album in New York, which the jury of the Anděl Awards - known as the Polish Grammys - selected as Album of the Year in the Jazz and Blues Category. He has played alongside Jorge Ross and Django Bates in addition to countless other European and American artists. Mika - a compatriot of Zaryan - won the 2015 International Jarek Śmietana Jazz Guitar Competition, a worthy heir to Peter Bernstein, Mike Stern and John Abercrombie. He is one of the most sought-after young guitarists on the Polish jazz scene. Indeed, Lage Lund became so worried upon hearing Mika perform that he (playfully) suggested he was afraid Mika would soon end up taking all the concert opportunities in sight.
Aga Zaryan has performed alongside partners of the calibre of Geri Allen, Jacob Collier, Freddy Cole, Brian Blade and Tomasz Stańko. She has released several albums with the Blue Note record label. She is a huge fan of both the classical jazz repertoire and contemporary music, as we shall see in her latest show.

The concert is organised by Müpa Budapest on the occasion of Hungary's presidency of the V4.
