The Tale of the Useless Jug (1956)

Three classic Hungarian puppet films about vanity, cold-heartedness and courage. The protagonist of The Tale of the Useless Jug is a milk container that swells to monstrous proportions. The film, based on Miklós Mészöly’s tale, is accompanied by music by György Ránki. The Shivering King, a puppet film adaptation of Ferenc Móra’s well-known verse tale, centres on a king carved from wood, who lacks a heart, and is perpetually cold. The film’s music was composed by György Kurtág. The Adventure of St. Gallen is a historical satire about carousing, corpulent monks and marauding Hungarian armies, with a playful musical score also written by György Ránki. All three puppet films were directed by István Imre, creator of the legendary television series Mekk Elek, the Handyman.

The event is taking place with the support of the National Film Institute, the organisers of the Budapest Classical Film Marathon.
