The series of digital screenings presented by the Palace of Arts and the Hungarian National Digital Archive and Film Institute (MaNDA) in the autumn programme of Müpa Cinema 2014 explore the many guises in which sexual desire, eroticism and nudity have been portrayed in the history of Hungarian film. Is Eros really pulling the strings here? When are women seen unclothed, and when are men? Do erotic scenes in Hungarian films convey a zest for life? How can the medium of film cope with the t...ext of erotic prose? What is erotic: full nudity, a mere shadow appearing on the wall, or a silk slip slowly pulled up over a suspender belt? What is the nature of our love culture, and how does it relate to the depiction of reality in films? What use has Hungarian film made of nudity other than in an erotic context? Is it possible to make "love films” today? These are some of the questions that András Réz's film club seeks to answer.
Among other reasons, Zoltán Huszárik's masterpiece perhaps became one of the legendary works of Hungarian cinematic art because every single frame holds erotic beauty. Sinbad's imagination flies from woman to woman based on the Secession's notion of love being betrothed to death. In the flow of association, everything is erotic: the painterly details of landscapes, the Secession-era motifs on silk wallpaper and the fluttering curtains, silk garments slowly slipping from bodies, drops of grease in the consommé and breasts glimpsed in windows. The film never portrays love consummated, but only desire and the nostalgia of a squandered life. Because Sinbad is never really with the woman he is with: his imagination is always with another. Who knows to what we owe the erotic scenes in old cemeteries, but in any event it is also part of the legend that - to paraphrase Krúdy - the members of the cast had their handkerchiefs filled with the catarrh of love.
