Attila Dargay’s third highly successful feature film, Szaffi, was inspired by Mór Jókai’s novella The Gypsy Baron, and tells the story of two lovers’ extraordinary reunion in the final days of the Ottoman occupation. True to Dargay’s other output, this romantic story is filled with charming animal characters and ironic, laugh-out-loud dialogues. The voice performances are equally iconic, with the main characters voiced by András Kern, Judit Pogány, Hilda Gobbi, György Bárdy, Ferenc Zenthe, László Csákányi and Judit Hernádi. The digital restoration was carried out with the help of Dargay’s long-time collaborator, the cinematographer Irén Henrik.
The event is taking place with the support of the National Film Institute, the organisers of the Budapest Classical Film Marathon.
