Few melodies in the world are as familiar to so many people as the French children’s song that provides the basis of the works to be presented at this concert. Sung by children in Hungary on St Nicholas Day, the song first appeared in print in 1761 and was subsequently adapted by several famous composers, among them Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Liszt, Elgar, Saint-Saëns and Ernő Dohnányi. The concert will feature several of these adaptations, allowing children to discover new and hitherto unfamiliar aspects of a well-known melody and to marvel at the inherently endless possibilities of music.
