Wagner

Der fliegende Holländer (1841 version) – opera in three acts, without intermission

Balázs Kovalik’s monumental and moving production of the original version of The Flying Dutchman caused a sensation when it was first premiered at Müpa Budapest in 2015 and will be returning in 2027 for the first time since 2018. Taking on the title role will be the German bass-baritone Michael Volle, an acclaimed veteran of the world’s top opera houses, including Bayreuth, where he has collaborated with leading conductors. The Müpa Budapest audience first got to meet him in 2019, and since then he has shown his versatility at concerts of works by Bach, Wagnerian arias and songs from Wagner and Liszt. The role of Senta will be sung by the Swiss mezzo-soprano Gabriela Scherer, whose repertoire ranges from Mozart to Puccini. She made her Bayreuth debut as Gutrune in Götterdämmerung in 2024. Albert Dohmen has appeared in Müpa Ring productions on several occasions, portraying the Wanderer in Siegfried, Hagen in Götterdämmerung and Hunding in Die Walküre. The other principals – Daniel Behle, Christa Mayer and AJ Glueckert – are also world-renowned soloists. Martin Rajna, co-artistic director of the Wagner Days festival, will be conducting this production for his first time.
