Shostakovich

Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 77

Beethoven

Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major (‘Eroica’), Op. 55

Founded in 1918, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra is one of Europe’s top symphonic ensembles and second in line in Holland only to the Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, having been led over the past half century by such marvellous conductors as Edo de Waart, Jeffrey Tate, Valery Gergiev and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. At the helm since 2018 has been the dynamic Israeli Lahav Shani, whose radiant talent was discovered by Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta. This concert marks a triumphant return to Budapest for him, as it does for the evening’s amazing soloist, the Moldavian/Austrian/Swiss violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, a highly original artist who rejects established formulas in her relentless search for new approaches. Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto and Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony No. 3 are two works emblematic of their respective eras.
