Mahler

Symphony No. 3 in D minor

BOUNDARIES. DIMENSIONS. THE UNIVERSE.
Mahler's Symphony No. 3 is his most ambitious orchestral composition. It is long, but not drawn out. The extraordinary dimensions of the music are warranted by the subject matter – nothing less than the universe itself and nature conceived as a soul. The composer and conductor Pierre Boulez once wrote, "Mahler’s world is not a homogeneous universe at all. He dares to risk disparate styles, he uses quotations and parodies as legitimate tools, and teaches us to listen to music anew: with more variety, more ambiguity and a greater richness." In a state approaching intoxication while composing his monumental Third Symphony, which was over an hour and a half in length, Mahler wrote to a friend, “There is always something trivial about my works, but this time I am surpassing every limit.”
