Prokofiev

Overture on Hebrew Themes, Op. 34bis

Prokofiev

Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26

Prokofiev

Cinderella Suite

‟Citizen. European. Pianist.” It is with these three words that Igor Levit, who will play all of Prokofiev’s piano concertos over the course of three concerts as a guest of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, introduces himself. On this second evening, the musician The New York Times called “one of the most important artists of his generation” will perform what is both the most famous and the most traditional piano concerto the composer wrote. The piece will be introduced by an orchestral version of Prokofiev’s original chamber overture on Hebrew themes, with a fairy tale taking centre stage after the intermission. Paying homage to Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev himself created three different suites from the earlier composer’s ballet Cinderella. For this performance, Iván Fischer selected movements from all three suites to compile his own Cinderella comprising half the length of a concert.
