Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major (“Spring”), Op. 38

A true musical polymath, Jörg Widmann is not only one of the greatest living masters of the clarinet, but also an excellent composer, arranger and conductor. His own compositions are approachable, entertaining, thought-provoking and inventive, and his carefully compiled concert programmes are harmonious in nature. He often juxtaposes his own pieces with compositions by Mendelssohn or Schumann – on this occasion, with a work by each bookending the two he wrote himself. The personal character of the evening will be further enhanced by the violin concerto he dedicated to his sister, Bavarian State Prize-winner Carolin Widmann, who will play it to close out the first part of the concert, followed after the interval by a short solo clarinet piece of his, which he will take on himself. After enjoying music depicting the bleak Scottish landscape and Widmann’s innovative sounds, we will hear Robert Schumann’s joyous composition anticipating the arrival of spring.
