Bruckner

Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, WAB 105

The music of Anton Bruckner is often compared to a Gothic cathedral that listeners can walk around and admire from every angle. Upon entering, they might marvel at the fascinating structure of the arches and buttresses or immerse themselves in the richly ornamented world of rose windows, sculptures and carvings. Cathedrals are permanent and unchangeable, but no matter your vantage point, there is always something new to explore. Exactly like Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony. While this monumental composition, one filling an entire concert programme on its own, invites endless analysis, it also remains an unforgettable experience for those there to simply sit back and enjoy the flowing music full of surprising twists and turns. At 86 years of age, regular BFO guest conductor Marek Janowski remains, as one critic put it, as precise as “a surgeon with a conductor’s baton”.
