On this evening, wouldn't it be great to rise above the seats of the Festival Theatre and take flight. To hear the sound of angel wings gently fluttering by. But we might also find exciting experience in having our wings clipped. This is what the performers of the Babel Evening Wings production hope to achieve.
Some 40 years ago, before we knew the term 'world music', the Kolinda Band created a new genre with their world-class arrangements of folk music. One of its founders, Ferenc Kiss, also played in another legendary ensemble, Vízöntő (Aquarius), before distilling the legacies of the two bands into the Etnofon Music Company. It is through his profound personality that he releases into the heavens everything that is inspired by peasant music, Béla Bartók, Endre Ady and the fates of those who must live in hiding.
It is thanks to the mercy of the fates that another Kolinda member, Iván Lantos, is able to spread his 'wings' as a member of Kistehén. The leader of the band, László Kollár-Klemencz, lives among chickens, geese and horses – all of which have wings – on his farm in Dömörkapu, where he rises as a pegasus above his earthly ties. He soars in the direction of heavenly folk-rock. The limit to his creativity is the starry sky and his voice an exploding supernova.
This is just a small part of this Babel-like chaos! We will bear witness to the contemporary circus duo of Gáspár Téri and Ilka Bardóczy, as well as Grotesque Gymnastics, who “on a six-metre pole, will engage in flying dialogue of all that cannot be danced with feet on the ground”. And we refuse to stop short of the peak when it comes to poetry either – László Darvasi is the guarantee of this.
