The Trio da Kali, who hail from Mali, are best known for the record they released in 2017, which was one of the finest world music albums of the year. Ladilikan, the LP, was a unique sensation: a joint album with the world famous contemporary string musicians of the Kronos Quartet, who are increasingly involved in world music projects. The threesome, whose members all come from major musical families of the griots, singers of the Mandé ethnic group, has since only performed live. Their music draws strongly on tradition: the group’s members are masters of the classic vocals, balafon and ngoni line-up, yet breathe new life into the ancient repertoire by embracing fresh contemporary influences. The former musical collaborator of Toumani Diabaté, the son of Bassekou Kouyaté and the daugher of Kasse Mady Diabaté form a truly overwhelming trio.
