Founded in Szentendre in 1995, Söndörgő's path was marked out by family ties to the Vujicsics Ensemble and a passion for southern Slavic folk music. With its outstanding virtuosity and overpoweringly fresh performance style, it has won the status of one of Europe's most popular Hungarian ensembles. Built around the Tambura - but also encompassing wind and percussion instruments and the acoordian - the band's instrumentation allows it to authentically explore the densest layers of Balkan mu...sic in a manner that even ensembles hailing from the peninsula are unable to achieve. The band has made a record with the Macedonian king of čoček, Ferus Mustafov, while their 2010 disc Lost Music of the Balkans was distributed in 60 countries by Harmonia Mundi/World Village. Tamburocket, released in October of last year, topped the European world music charts, and the band also enchanted the public of the WOMEX festival in Santiago de Compostela in the same month.
The music of Söndörgő's guests Mostar Sevdah Reunion comes from the the iconic Herzegovian city of Mostar and the folk traditions of sevdalinka, a word derived from the Ottomon Turkish 'sevdah', meaning the longing sense of being in love. This might be described as the Bosnian blues, but is also no stranger to elements of jazz and folk rock. It is at once fresh and heavily laden in history, the burden of both unrequited love and the old bridge that symbolises the old Balkan city. It is no coincidence that the band of 16 years has grown into the most prestigious ensemble of the Balkans on the back of its hugely successful album Tales from a Forgotten City and other recordings.
To sum up: The meeting of these two legendary groups will turn the Söndörgő anniversary into a veritable celebration of Balkan music. At the very least…
