The duo of singer and guitarist Soma Nóvé, well-known in Hungary from the bands Middlemist Red and Mordái, and Dániel Riederauer, an electronics and bass guitar player, first performed as Samurai Drive in 2019. Their eponymous debut album, released in 2020, paid tribute to the atmosphere of midnight cinemas in an encounter between electronic music, blues, new wave sounds and a film noir aesthetic. After the equally brilliant 2021 Hunt EP, they returned at the end of 2023 with a song influenced by Isaac Hayes and Morphine. At Müpa Budapest, they will perform with an instrumental set-up that until now had only existed in the heads of the songwriting pair.
In the group’s own words, their music “is recommended for those treading a lonely path in the early hours”, with their unique sound creating a mood of crooners leaning on the bar, the atmosphere of a smoky jazz club and dark electronica. The artists returned from their break with the song Remedy, recorded in November of 2023 and recommended for “young people and old, the broken-hearted and the carefree”. Now, they will perform their songs – both new and more familiar – in a manner that they had previously only ever imagined. At this concert, there will be several accompanying musicians on hand to support the pair and help create an even more colourful and animated sound. “Playing at Müpa Budapest gives us the opportunity to experiment with new things and ideas for the show, to let our imaginations run free.” The Crazy 88 of the title for the show refers to the infamous army from the Kill Bill universe. Here, however, they will be exchanging swords for instruments to help elicit the features and motifs – often reminiscent of eastern musical culture – found in Samurai Drive’s music and melodic sound.
