Accompanying himself on piano and guitar, Canadian-American musician Rufus Wainwright is considered one of the most talented contemporary songwriters in popular music. Acclaimed in both his own genre and as a composer for opera, he also possesses of one of the finest voices in pop. His first opera Prima Donna was presented this June in Pécs and Budapest in a production directed by Róbert Alföldi, and the work won the audience prize at the Armel Opera Festival. Wainwright is currently completing his second opera, the monumental Hadrian, which is due to première in 2018. He has found great success with his cover versions of songs such as Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, his Grammy Award-nominated Judy Garland tribute show and musical settings of Shakespeare's sonnets alike. His music appears on numerous film soundtrack albums (Moulin Rouge, Shrek, Zoolander, The Aviator, Bridget Jones, Brokeback Mountain, Boardwalk Empire, etc.), and he has also appeared in duet or as co-writer on albums by Robbie Williams.
At this concert, besides key songs from the first two decades of his career so far, Wainwright will also perform a number of compositions from his new pop album planned for 2018.
