According to Iggy Pop, if anyone starts complaining music isn't like it was in the good old days, they should listen to Nubya Garcia. DownBeat, the prestigious American jazz magazine, also chose Garcia as one of the 25 most definitive performers of the 2020s. Significant recognition, and Garcia has done little to dispel such notions. The 30-year-old saxophonist explores her origins and sets a trailblazing path.
Nubya Garcia was born in London to Guyanese and Trinidadian parents. She received classical music training and learned to play the violin and viola, before holding a saxophone in her hands for the first time at the age of ten - she proved to have an innate talent. Garcia became a member of the Camden Jazz Band, before joining the Royal Academy of Music's youth talent programme. After earning a scholarship with the Berklee College of Music in Boston, she then graduated with the highest honours from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. She soon found herself in the company of artists who, like her, find inspiration for their music in a combination of African cultural roots, modern jazz and the electronic sounds of the club scene. She has worked alongside Makaya McCraven, Shabaka Hutchings, MOBO-winner Moses Boyd and the legendary producer Congo Natty. When her debut EP, Nubya's 5ive, was released, every single vinyl copy sold out in the space of a day. The following year, her EP When We Are made it to the British charts in the first week of its release. In 2018, she won the Jazz FM Breakthrough Act of the Year Award and Sky Arts Breakthrough Act Award, while Jazz FM also named her UK Jazz Act of the Year in 2019. In 2020, she released her first LP, the highly acclaimed Source.
