In the old days, when our Hungarian kings returned home from warfare in important causes, or when the plague, the Turks or the Tartars decimated the country, but also on holidays, what was often sung on the occasion was the wonderful 4th-century Christian hymn: "We praise you, God”. The New Year's greeting offers an opportunity to deepen ourselves, to fill our souls with the treasures left to us by the old Hungarians, and thus to unite the difficulties ahead in the new year.
Today, as we find ourselves engaged in many kinds of struggles, are being decimated by the coronavirus epidemic, and experience the beginning of the year as some sort of watershed moment, many of us find it equally important to seek the help of the Almighty. And, of course, everything that the organisers have condensed into this show from peasant traditions, from the Moldavian practice of bidding farewell to the old year to Transdanubian carolling, can help in the renewal. It is by now traditional for the programme to feature the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and a selection of participants from the Fölszállott a páva television talent search, along with performers engaged in keeping folk traditions alive and thriving across the Carpathian Basin. Come welcome the new year with a host of traditions!
