Napra: Kálmán Balogh – cimbalom, Zoltán Bobár – accordion, Miklós Both – guitar, vocals, Máté Hegedűs – violin, Kinga Krámli – vocals, Ferenc Pfeiler – drums, Csaba Winter – bass guitar Barbaro: Miklós Both – vocals, guitar, Sándor Cziránku – guitar, Sándor Herpai – drums, Tamás Zsoldos – bass guitar Perhaps the leading exponents of Hungarian and Balkan influenced ethno-music Barbaro have enjoyed many successes and failures in their twenty years. They were formed by members of the Kolinda,... Gépfolklór, Ködkonda and Zsarátnok groups, all of whom played progressive folk music that stretched the boundaries of genre and geography. It is now clear to us that Barbaro’s first album, released in 1990, is one of the cardinal moments in the history of Hungarian world music history. Despite its success it was not released on CD, although albums were changing hand for astronomic sums. The wind that was blowing in the early nineties missed out Hungary, otherwise this band might have been elevated before its time to its deserved heights. After their second record, they fell silent. After lapsing into almost total obscurity, they reformed three years ago with Miklós Both replacing Jorgosz Tzotzoglu. By autumn 2007, a new/old Barbaro third album was ready: Barbaro III – with a fresh dynamism and taste breathing new life into the band’s characteristic “steppe sound”. And to ensure we get a double helping of delights, before Barbaro we’ll see Napra which was created by the Barbaro guitarist Miklós Both. Formed three years ago, they play an exciting rock synthesis of Carpathian Basin folk music and experimental rock. They will be presenting material from their debut album Jaj, a világ! which has been eagerly awaited and was created in collaboration with one of the great English producers in the realm of world music Ben Mandelson.
