Early Music Festival

What Judit Andrejszki is to early music - the towering, pre-eminent figure of the genre - Márta Sebestyén is in the world of folk music. Their concerts together always make for an exciting journey. On this occasion, they will be joined by Miquèu and Baltazar Montanaro, as well as a host of superb Hungarian performers, all of whom will liven up the programme with their inimitable personalities and personal musical worlds. Miquèu Montanaro is a troubadour to the bone: a true Occitan musician. The same goes for his son Baltazar, a virtuoso violinist. Both are European wayfarers in a world of ethnically-inspired, free-form music that knows no borders. Although rooted in the music of Provence, they feel equally at home with Eastern European musical traditions. In addition to authentic French baroque music, the audience will also bear witness here to a unique encounter of French and Hungarian folk sounds.

'The rustic nature of folk music, and the vitality with which it is performed dovetail beautifully with the no-less full-blooded and joyful songs of the Renaissance. Sadly, these genres are often 'overly prettified', or excessively refined, giving people a false image of both musical realms. What we are trying to do is bring them closer to the modern audience in a format enjoyable in our own time, with personal commentary and a direct style.' (Márta Sebestyén)
