Portuguese fado - the melancholic music of eternal yearning - speaks to the soul, and Amália Rodrigues, considered by many to be the queen of the genre, was the one who cultivated it the most profoundly. After her death in 1999, however, there came along another singer who also brought worldwide renown to the style. Now she is unequivocally its biggest star and a recipient of the WOMEX Lifetime Achievement Award. Mariza first emerged on a television programme paying tribute to Rodrigues, and twenty years later she dedicated an entire album to the legendary singer, which she is now presenting on a tour that includes Müpa Budapest among its stops.

Mariza burst onto the Portuguese music scene with great flair: not only was she one of the singers with the potential to occupy the throne left vacant by Rodrigues, but it soon became obvious that she could become the great new diva of fado internationally as well. That it turned out like this was due to Mariza's impressive facility with traditional fado, along with the fact that she was able to renew and refresh the genre, performing it with impact and authenticity in a contemporary musical environment. Ever since releasing her debut album in 2001, she has always retained some of the fados made famous by Rodrigues in her repertoire, singing very old songs from the 19th century while also coming out with new compositions specifically tailored for her and tastefully adding Brazilian, African and even jazz influences to her music. Nevertheless, it was only in 2020 that she dedicated a full CD to Rodrigues, on the twentieth anniversary of the launch of her own career, and now with this album entitled Canta Amália, we get another chance to welcome her to the Müpa Budapest stage. It is a wonderful pairing of two celebrated ambassadors of Portuguese music, and Mariza has renewed and expanded the genre and possibilities of fado in the same way that Rodrigues did in the 1960s and '70s.
