No matter what production Lőrinc Barabás is creating, he always carefully selects the most suitable instrumental environment, companions and visual elements for the given musical and atmospheric direction he is aiming for. Now working solo for more than a decade, he feels extremely close to the minimalism of live act performance. A kindred spirit is the German Niklas Paschburg, himself a multi-instrumentalist with a rapidly growing fan base and a master of one-man sound painting. On this evening, they were creating music both separately and from a shared palette.
Barabás opened his world up to solo performance with his 2013 album Sastra, which was followed by 2015’s Elevator Dance Music. Following the spirit of the time, Algorhythms was released as a pen drive packaged in a CD case. In addition to his trumpet, he uses keyboard instruments, a looper and other sound modulators to play his original compositions. Sometimes what he creates is a meditative, “chill-out” atmosphere, at other times he weaves a more rhythmic fabric, moving in the direction of dance or electro funk, but he still never turns his back on jazz styles either. With their definite sense of character, his pieces are almost like film soundtracks, and the same can be said about Hamburg-born Niklas Paschburg, who released his debut album, Oceanic, in 2018. For Paschburg, the starting point is the piano. On this, he spreads new layers of sound with his laptop, and even audio samples taken from nature, such as the sound of waves or of wind. His toolbox also includes the accordion and various percussion instruments. Upon hearing his music, no one will be surprised to learn that while he was initially influenced by Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds, his goal was always to create a unique Niklas Paschburg-type world. The shape of this world is already clearly defined by his 2020 album Svalbard. This event was presented in association with the Hungarian Jazz Federation.

This recording was made at a concert held at Müpa Budapest on 27 January 2023.
