Kaukázus was formed in the early 2000 in Tatabánya, apparently “to give us something to do so we wouldn’t die of boredom at school”. But perceptive listeners discovered that their first album had an interesting message between the lines: here were sharp minds deeply questioning globalisation and offering a critical view of the world along with a penetrating narrative ability. The front man János Kardos Horváth is an entirely different kind of lyricist. Lyrics that criticise the system have been ...neglected since the punk era but there are certainly no shortage of questions that deserve to be asked these days, and he hands out a manual together with responsible solutions. But he does not fall into the tempting pitfalls of playing to the gallery, self-pity or party politics. The band also avoids the greatest traps in the musical sphere. Although their sound has been refined from record to record, they haven’t over complicated their music. They sometimes play beat music with taste, sometimes, 90s alternative rock which perfectly serves the communication of their message. The lead singer’s adolescent sounding voice has the effect that when we hear their words which sometimes depict poetic images with the darkest possible cynicism, we don’t head for the nearest razor blade cupboard. Their activities off the stage – free downloadable record, a normal homepage, pithy statements – make them even more appealing. They are certainly not going to vanish from one moment to the next. Proof of this is their concert at the Palace of Arts where they will be holding their long awaited first “theatre concert”.
