Jazz Legends

Rebirth, constant rejuvenation, transformation. This is what characterises the artistic work of the 50-year-old Kálmán Oláh, and is also something that we will experience over the course of the evening as we encounter the meeting point of a range of different styles. It is also something we ourselves will experience as, after the long period of quarantine, we are finally able to attend concerts again that can provide us with a spiritual and intellectual boost. The performance will also include a new piece Oláh was commissioned to create by Müpa Budapest, and will feature a special guest, double-bassist John Patitucci, to help play the works.

Kálmán Oláh has always been attracted to the fact that jazz both requires and offers freedom, just like contemporary and classical music, though their nature is based on more disciplined, composed and larger forms and structures. Few people are capable of brilliantly realising this delicate balance between free forms and constraint. Yet Kálmán Oláh always meets with success, regardless of whether he's performing with the Trio Midnight, his sextet, as part of Attila László's band, or if he's playing jazz classics, pieces inspired by Bartók or groove-based fusion numbers. To perform several familiar compositions of his along with Return to Pangea, a brand-new work that he wrote for Müpa Budapest's 15th birthday, the Ferenc Liszt- and Ferenc Erkel-award winning composer and pianist will be joined at this concert by the Danubia Orchestra Óbuda, helmed by László Kovács, as well as an older comrade-in-arms of his on drums, Elemér Balázs, three generations of his saxophonists - Mihály Borbély, Kristóf Bacsó and Kálmán Oláh Jr - along with trombonist Ferenc Schreck and double-bassist John Patitucci, who has created highly successful joint albums with both Oláh and Szakcsi Generations, as well as with Tim Ries, Chris Potter and Billy Drummond.
