Led by Wynton Marsalis, the 15-strong Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra was formed from the most outstanding instrumental soloists and session musicians of our time. This strikingly versatile ensemble boasts a huge repertoire spanning original compositions by its members, pieces commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center, rare gems from jazz history, and evergreen hits made famous by the likes of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman and Charles Mingus.

JLCO has been the resident orchestra of Jazz at Lincoln Center since 1988. Its responsibilities include the staging of educational performances in New York, the rest of the United States and worldwide. Since it formed, the JLCO has performed in 300 cities across six continents, including productions with symphony orchestras, dance troupes, local students and top guest artists. Wynton Marsalis, the driving force and artistic director behind this organisation committed to educating audiences receptive to the values of Jazz at Lincoln Center and jazz as a whole, was born in 1961 in New Orleans. He laid the foundations for his career as a teenager in the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers. Since 1982, he has released more than 60 jazz and classical music records, of which nine have won Grammy Awards. His oratorio Blood on the Fields earned him a Pulitzer Prize. He is not only a superb performer, but also a pioneer of jazz education and internationally renowned teacher having received honorary degrees from several dozen American universities and written six books. Kofi Annan appointed him a UN Messenger for Peace in 2001.
