Bettika Bakos and her co-creators certainly chose the rockier path, given that despite their young age they set out with the aim of creating a unique musical language that would allow them to become intimate with the work of the artists who have the greatest impact on them. Their training, their openness and their uncompromising attitude have also made a significant contribution to their ever-increasing success. They also wowed the international jury of the 2021 Jazz Showcase, which is why they will return to Müpa Budapest on International Jazz Day as the winners of the Jazz Talent Exchange's Professional Prize.
Bettina Bakos, otherwise known as Bettika, was born in the Hungarian city of Orosháza in 1995. She is a singer, songwriter and student in the jazz department of the Liszt Academy. She is engaged with improvisation, free music, theatre music and mantra-singing, and teaches and holds workshops in all these areas. The Bettika Quintet work with elements of jazz, free improvisation, world music and contemporary poetry music.
Much of the group's programme consists of their own creative output, ...including several examples of poetry set to music. It is a sound rooted in jazz and decorated with elements of jazz-poetry and spoken word, whose rhythm and text is built around the works of Hungarian poets such as Dezső Tandori, Ede Tarbay, István Bella, István Csukás and Sándor Weöres. Their show will also include pieces that can be classified as world music, chiefly reworkings of Hungarian and Gypsy folk melodies, whose complex rhythms and sense of drama lend the group's performances a thrilling diversity. Their instrumental songs on the other hand, give space to free improvisation and playing games within given musical frameworks. In 2020, as a duo Bettika and Zoltán Dévényi achieved a second-place finish in the MTVA Hanghordozók competition, performing a musical arrangement of Zsolt Székelyhidi's poem Kölyökidő (Kid Time).
