The composer born from a Croatian father and Serbian mother emigrated to France to escape the Yugoslav War. He has become a star of Balkan Gypsy music with his Gypsy music medleys compiled for marriages and funerals. His popularity has also been increased by the movies created together with the ’Fellini of East Europe’, Emire Kusturica. These films have made the Bregovic-type Balkan rock an article much in demand worldwide. The special aroma of his music owns to the fact that he enchants the delicately used materials of melody and rhythm to a higher level, while these do not lose anything from their original authenticity. His compositions have spread around the world as Balkan evergreens, and turned more and more music and dance enthusiasts into unconditional believers of the genre. Karmen with a Happy End is Bregovic’s latest work: he wrote the words, the music and also directed it. This opera with a contemporary setting is only partially connected to Bizet's Carmen, in as much as it asks why the arts are no different from life: there is only one opera which has Gypsies as its heroes and this opera ends tragically. In Bregovic’s sad/happy opera, Karmen and Emilio’s love contradicts art and life…
