Firkin: Jumpin’ John
Bucolic Celtic Frolics – Burns and other Scots impudence
17 June 2013, Monday
6 pm - 7:50 pm
Festival Theatre
Produced by Müpa Budapest

Firkin is a group that reinforces its core tradition of Celtic-Irish music with rock, pop, punk and, naturally, Hungarian folk music. Balancing at the crossroads of mainstream and folk music cultures, Firkin has achieved considerable popularity both abroad and on the domestic stage. Its audience grows on a practically daily basis, from the smallest clubs to major festivals, captivating music-lovers from Lee’s Palace in Toronto to the Palace of Arts in Budapest. On this occasion the band flies us away on an adventure dreamt up by Robert Burns: a romance of the Scottish Highlands between a Scots shepherd boy and a beautiful Irish lass. The boy’s love is slain, and so he takes to the road to wander, carouse at the dockside among the sailors, get into fights in taverns and flirt with girls, living through a series of risqué adventures until he meets his new beloved. Disappointments follow before the lovers find each other and their inevitable happy end, as Burns wrote it, or at least as he might have... all with a level of musical energy that can banish even the greatest sorrow.
