Featuring:

drum Zach Danziger

Already well-known in the world of jazz, Donny McCaslin has become a familiar name across wider circles since January 2016, with the release of David Bowie's final album, recorded in secret in 2015 with the collaboration of the Donny McCaslin Quartet. With Blackstar, Bowie's hitherto pop music sound was enriched with completely new colours, and this was in large measure the work of McCaslin's ensemble.
The only predictable element of McCaslin's first ten solo albums was their unpredictability. Each album came with a new line-up and, for the most part, with a new sound, demonstrating the saxophonist/composer's capacity for constant renewal. One senses the influence not only of the great pioneering predecessors, like Herbie Hancock and Weather Report, but also contemporaries from electronic music such as Aphex Twin and Skrillex. “I really like the sound textures that you can hear in this kind of music,” says McCaslin of modern electronic dance music, whose impact is audible in his more recent recordings. McCaslin has been to Hungary several times, including as a member of Steps Ahead and the Dave Douglas Quartet. This time he will play at Müpa Budapest leading his own quartet.
