Director: György Böhm The first “Dance Song Festival! Dance Song Festival?” concert took place in February this year and was such a hit with audiences that it is organised a second time. In Hungary, Dance Song Festivals are about nostalgia. But in their time, the second half of the sixties, these competitions served as important forums for revitalising Hungarian light music. So it is perhaps worthwhile examining them in this light so that besides nostalgia we appreciate their path-breaking inte...ntion. How would the festival hits sound if performed differently? The Palace of Arts’ concert was created to answer this question. Of course, we don’t really hear how fresh and innovative these songs were when first heard. For us, we just get a pleasant feeling of nostalgia. Some of the songs are still well known and some of the singers are important participants of the light music scene. But when these songs are heard individually, they evoke thoughts of the pleasant atmosphere of house parties from the past, with a glass of wine or beer. The uniqueness of this event, directed by György Böhm, is that it doesn’t just revive ancient memories but tries to communicate the original spirit of the show, which is to say to present new sounds and unusual interpretations. So at its centre, the songs will be given new clothes, different styles and genres. So a former waltz will be heard as blues, a light pop song can evolve into a jazz motive, a modern rock song into a tearful chanson, the singers of ex-formation Jazz+Az present a well known song or folk musician Bea Palya will sing a great hit of Kati Kovács. In essence, nothing will be heard unchanged. Everything is changed because forty years of time and music have elapsed!
