The year 2013 offered a plethora of memorable experiences for the Kossuth Prize-winning Csík Ensemble and its fans as the band celebrated the 25th anniversary of its foundation. The string of celebratory concerts is not yet over, and every week brings a new sensation, whether it's a book in which Gergő Süveges relates the story of the ensemble, or a double vinyl album with new recordings of the greatest Csík hits, released in only 1,500 individually autographed copies. If they're going to ...celebrate, they may as well do it in style.
For this to happen, of course, the band's 25 years together needed to be something well worth celebrating. Step by step, we've seen them grow from an ensemble which initially played mainly authentic peasant music, and which was known primarily in traditional dance house circles, into genuine stylistic innovators whose popularity is unprecedented in the folk music genre. The proof of this is that the band's music has the power to capture the hearts of urban youth who know peasant culture at most from books, and for whom pop is their "folk music”. The Csík Ensemble has risen to the top by making traditional cultures more accessible, essentially by "reforming the language” of folk music - but without losing one iota of their immersion in folk music tradition. The Csík Ensemble knows exactly the obligation their 25-year path - and the celebration of it - places upon them. They do not sway from performing peasant music as they have learned it from the greatest traditional performers. But they reserve the right to update this tradition and to dress it in new stylistic clothes, just as Béla Bartók did in his own time.
A new Csík album, the band's seventh, is in the works. All we know about it so far is that it will feature both authentic folk music in the band's idiosyncratic style and new arrangements of popular tunes. One thing is certain, we all need to head to this concert!
