Featuring: Fool Moon Vocal Ensemble, Baptist Bell Band Gyula Csepregi has been one of Hungary’s premiere saxophonists for decades and he is celebrating his fiftieth birthday with this grand concert. This musician will demonstrate just what a versatile guy he is: he’s exploring everything from big band jazz (Swing Ladies Hungary) to fusion (In Line) and modern acid jazz (Csepregi Hip-Bop). He first came to prominence in the early 1980s in Gyula Kovács’s drum band; between 1982 and 1984 he was a... resident member of the Aladár Pege group with whom he toured all Europe. In 1987 he founded with Béla Szakcsi Lakatos, Pál Vasvári and Vilmos Jávori the Hungarian Jazz Quartet, one of the most successful of all Hungarian jazz formations who decided to celebrate their twentieth anniversary by reforming, setting off on a new concert tour and then found time to release a brand new record. Since 1988 Csepregi has been a member of Hungarian Radio’s legendary Studio 11 band, and for several years was its artistic director. The band has now severed its links with the radio and is continuing as an independent formation, preserving its own traditions and exploring its own boundaries. Gyula Csepregi has won numerous eMeRTon and other prizes for his saxophone playing and has given gigs with such supreme partners as Mike Stern, Russell Ferrante, Dave Samuels and Alex Acuna. Alongside the birthday boy and his friends, the stars of Hungarian jazz will be out in force for this concert, which will also feature the five member Fool Moon Vocal Ensemble who are riding the crest of a wave just now, as well as the novel Baptist Bell Band. Everyone involved in this Csepregi production will be demonstrating their own unique and individual relationship to improvised music.
