It has been a long time since Söndörgő has required an introduction even outside of Hungary, as this group preserving the South Slav musical tradition is world-class, widely recognised and popular by any international standard. Jazz saxophonist Chris Potter also needs no introduction to the Hungarian audience, as he has given several notable performances in this country. This joint concert, though, is a very welcome and exciting pairing - on this evening we will get to listen to the music from the album they recorded together in the spring.
Partly because of their family ties to the Vujicsics Ensemble and their instrumental mix essentially built around the tambura, Söndörgő can authentically play even the thickest layers of Balkan music. Their virtuosity and fresh-sounding performance style have made the Eredics family line-up popular all over the world, a band who, after learning from authentic masters (Vujicsics, Ferus Mustafov) and working together with them, also released a joint album with the Amsterdam Klezmer Band. This in itself was an indication that the group were open to other directions as well, and the majority of their new album, recorded during the spring, also features the playing of Chris Potter. Söndörgö and Potter are old acquaintances, and the band wanted to record music with him based on their shared ideas as early as 2020. But the pandemic forced them to put this off until April 2022, when they met in the studio without a moment's hesitation. This album release concert will be a chance for the audience to hear these new songs for the first time, as the musicians debut these fresh and exciting compositions that depart from their usual styles live in concert. "We realized that, after all the subtly built-in inspirations, there was nothing to tweak here: we had to put everything into this collaboration from our core experience, as if we've always played together with Chris.”
