Bea Palya, Michal Elia Kamal and the Light in Babylon

Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

“My Silks” – Divas from around the world

Bea Palya's special guest for this concert will be Michal Elia Kamal and her band Light in Babylon, from Turkey. "There are some female singers," Bea Palya says, "Who are attractive because they are so different, and others with whom I feel a kind of sisterhood. Elia is the latter - if we were walking through the streets of Istanbul, you might think we were siblings. Like me, she also has rhythm in her body: she dances and feels the beat, just like me. And just like me, Elia celebrates the power of shared singing, while her band surrounds her with beautiful sounds. Our joint concert will also be a celebration."

Bea Palya's series My Silks - Divas From Around the World, which began in 2015, offers a double helping for fans of the singer. Her musical adventures not only give you the chance to learn about Bea and her band's latest journey, but also about someone who the singer closely identifies with, the "fairies of song and musical Amazons who have caressed, cradled or awoken her from bad dreams”.
On this evening, she will welcome Light in Babylon as her special guests. The band was founded by Michal Elia Kamal, who is of Iranian roots, was born in Israel and now resides in Turkey. Kamal began her career as a street musician in Istanbul, accompanied by Iranian Metehan Çiftçi (santur) and French Julien Demarque (guitar), before they were later joined by the Turkish Payam Ghasemi (bass) and Englishman Stuart Dickson (drums). From their diverse roots, a colorful music universe has emerged that will captivate fans of Turkish Gypsy music and Sephardic Jewish songs. But even more than this stylistic richness, you will likely be struck by the passionate performance style that characterises Kamal's sound, and that will be intertwined with Palya's Bea like an unbroken thread of silk.
