Bridging Europe: 2014 Germany

Pina Bausch's filmed piece from 1987 draws on biographical sources. The choreographer, who was born in 1940 (and passed away in 2009), transports us to the German city of Solingen at the time of the Second World War. To the music of Purcell's semi-opera The Fairy-Queen, a slender woman clad in white enters among the chairs and tables of a small café. She is followed by two other women, one of whom, clearly blind, moves tentatively through the furniture in her path. Two men hurriedly approach to move away the obstacles. One of them suddenly finds himself face to face with the blind woman, and their shoulders touch. The other man tries separating them, but they come together again and again. This is repeated almost to the suggestion of infinity …

The screening is made possible with the support of the Goethe Institute.
