This panel exhibition at Müpa Budapest offers an intimate yet vibrantly colourful portrait of György Kurtág, his oeuvre and his relationships. Through personal stories, iconic works and defining encounters, the panels guide visitors through the life and career of one of the 20th and 21st centuries’ most influential composers: from his childhood in Lugoj to the Liszt Academy and on to Paris and Berlin, all the way to the triumphant Milan premiere of Fin de partie. Special emphasis is placed on his creative partnership with Márta Kurtág and the intimacy of their four-hand piano playing, as well as the dialogues he maintained with figures such as Ligeti, Kocsis, Jeney, Eötvös, Esterházy and Víkingur Ólafsson. Photographs, quotations and anecdotes paint a picture of an extraordinary artistic ethos: that of a composer who is disciplined to the utmost degree, yet profoundly human.
