In 1985, directing debutant Péter Tímár’s satire narrowly escaped a ban and caused the biggest surprise of the year. The film represents the 'cheerful end-game of East European socialism', at the same time ironically documenting the advent of home video technology. The manager of a crate factory out in the sticks and his shifty fire chief install a hidden camera in the wall of the women’s changing-room, allowing other managers from the area to spy on them in return for buying crates. However, the scam is discovered and the angry Amazons call a strike, leading to a hostage-taking situation and a fire outbreak.
The voyeuristic and bullying bosses are astonishingly clumsy and gawky, thanks to the technique of the director – originally a special effects man – of filming the actors moving backwards, thus also obliging them to produce their reactions in reverse. All this Tímár marries to a condensed, abstract language reduced to the roots of words. The best part, however, is Kata Kristóf’s twist scene, as she wrestles with the office furniture in the summer heatwave to the Hungarian pop tune Limbó hintó.

Our visitors are kindly informed that this film will be screened in Hungarian.
