An elefant in a pushchair? A swan in a hat box? No, we haven't gone crazy: these and many more wonders besides are to be found in Kata Bartha's one-person musical show. In the expert hands of the puppeteer, enough friendly wild animals for an entire zoo are brought to life, stumbling, swinging and dancing to some very familiar songs. Genuine entertainment for all the family is guaranteed in a production where size doesn't matter: the tiny puppets should be viewed up close and will thrill spectators in this hilarious show.
The Carnival of the Animals, written in 1886 by Camille Saint-Saëns - a defining figure of the French Late Romantic musical era - is still taught in schools today, though of course that's not the main reason for its enduring popularity. The witty, loveable music is catchy, easy to remember and full of distinctive moments. And if you listen carefully, your ears will capture the sound of an army of animals brought to life, from elephants and turtles to swans and much much more besides. Balázs Várnai has made some minor adjustments to the original music: a dozen short etudes await the children, who will make friends with the charming creatures that emerge the depths of the mysterious boxes that surround an old-fashioned baby stroller, transformed into a puppet theatre stage by Kata Bartha. A string of witty episodes create a true carnival atmosphere as the members of the imaginary zoo show us what kind of tricks and displays they are capable of. Not every attraction is an immediate success, of course. In fact, some of them struggle even after several attempts, though there is no room for disappointment. In this ambitious and carefully crafted puppet world, old toys are given new life to spectacular effect. Play is an essential part of the show, which will conclude with an interactive conversation that enables the children to see their new favourites even closer than before!
